Are We Short or Long???--time orientation__the fourth@4

This article which title “Amid Treetops and Astride Camels” has related to the Hofstede’s Culture Model of Analysis which focusing on short term and long term orientation. In long term orientation, such as Malaysia, we still follow our tradition from last century till now. From article, we can see that we still maintain our tradition although our country on develop. Malaysia have many races such as Malay, Chinese, Indian, Kadazan , Orang Asli and others. These races have colorful tradition that they practice in their lifestyle. They full and rich in custom and tradition in term of wedding, music, dance, language, and others so it not a thing that we need to forget because this tradition had been practice from the long time ago.

For US people those are practice a short term orientation, they don't have tradition and custom for their country that was practice in the past because in the ancient, many of people from difference country and background had been moved to US. In the simple word, they are all immigrant that come from the other country was need to find and build a new state. We can conclude that is Malaysian people and US people have a bigger differentiate in term of lifestyle, custom, tradition, culture and others.

In this article, it a quite funny because why the outsider said that we still live in trees. Come on!! Now we are in 21th century. We are always developing and improve our lifestyle so why the outsider still think and expect that we are still using stone to sent a messages to others. We cannot blame them because the information about Malaysia are not spread widely.

In short term orientation, they stand for fostering respect for tradition but its does not mean that they follow that tradition. The outsider like US people, they are more straight forward in their speaking with others. In the other side, for long term orientation, they are more refer and apply their tradition in their life. Referring to the article, in Malay tradition, most of people in Malaysia speak politely with other people although they actually insinuate. For example in the article, when American ask something like "do you live in trees?" although we feel that it is stupid question, we as Malaysian still answering it like "yes, we do but nowadays we take escalators to go up the trees”. Even its look like insinuate, still in a polite way.

The more interesting part in this article is about Soraya story. Its really funny when her husband and her sister in law believes that she is from 'Nonok' tribe even it is not true at all. Her husband and sister in law respect and not tease her tribe.

In conclusion, we think that Malaysia is a long term orientation and US is a short term orientation. For this two term of orientation, it is a cross cultural dimension that refers to the degree of which people favor tradition and present versus innovation and the future.
