Round Two : You might be a big fish in a little pond

Assignment 2 : Cultural Dimension

According Hofstede, Individualism-Collectivism, is a cross-cultural dimension that refers to two opposing points of view on the norms of values of a national culture - whether they should place greater emphasis on satisfying personal interests or on looking after group needs.
Referring to an article given by Miss Fisha adapted from "A Nyonya in Texas written by Lee Sue Kim". Page 112-116, shows that the writer migrate from Malaysia which a small and multi-racial country to The United States of America which is the develop country. It is very interesting story btw. We laugh out loud. But once a upon a time there are place name Nonok at Sarawak, but maybe already change. Who told us? Guess who?... P.M Hj. Dahari… keh keh keh

As we know, The United States is an individualism country because they are more tendencies of people to look after themselves and their immediate families. From the article, the writer said some Americans still lack of knowledge about Malaysia because they thought that Malaysian still live in trees. Means that The US is a “selfish country” because their government is too busy developing their country since “since era of Einstein”, we are not sure since when but for sure they develop long time ago before Malaysia.

The US is practice individualism. They colonize small and weak countries such as Afghanistan, Bosnia, Pakistan, Singapore and Indonesia. Apparently, they associated with Israel to bombing Palestine for their own good and their own personal interest. In the article shows that, American underestimate on small countries especially Muslim countries, they see Muslim countries as terrorist countries since 11TH September 2001 maybe before that also.

“….complained that her son’s American tuition teacher asked her curiously if they rode around on camels in her homeland”.

Why American still scrutinize perturbing question to people? Now is globalization era. They should notice that there a many small countries are now developing and using the same technologies align with them. Why they didn’t notice all these? We think because they all have personal achievement which is everybody struggle and working so hard to achieve their own goal without looking back to their past and weaknesses. They don’t have any time to know about our country. For them “time is money”. For us “Masa itu emas”, there's always tomorrow. Tommorow never die. owh really?

Americans very obsess with their brought minded thinking and their Western culture, they want all people around the world notice what they do, what they wear, what they see and what they hear. If there are people like this, they consume them as an urban people. Urban in Western is very differing from urban in Eastern. In Eastern, although their countries in developing, but they still get a feel for their “ great great great grandfather culture”. The Eastern people still respect their culture even though the culture is getting used to them since long time ago.

“I never heard about Malaysia. …..there wasn’t very much available”

This is typical Americans actually. They actually don’t know and they pretend that they knows everything. C’mon US kot…..It shows that, The US very proud if people around the world know about them. They are very happy if we are speak in English very fluently, we eat bread and burger plus cheese every day, we use bad language in our daily life, we use or we buy their brands.

Yes, they are happy. But sometimes, they don’t ever realize that some rather they don’t have any culture or any tradition to follow?. Actually they have nothing to proud of. Let say, if I say that I never heard about The US. What do you think the American will judge me? Stupid? Alien? eheh, even animals know where is US . If you say this to them, they will really upset, and they will set in their mind that Malaysian “it is so last summerrr”.

If they come to our country, they want us to welcome them with very big smile (even it is fake!!) and a big hug with “kompang” here and there, but when we are there, what do you think it might be? Do they hug and kiss you like we do? Do they smile like we do? Ok la… at least do they say any greetings to you? Yes? No? Any ideas?...

Ahah, we are in a collectivism country, since then we are following our tradition generation by generation, Even in politics, the MP’s and all the representatives follows what the people want, even there some of them have the personal interest. Majority all MPs show the good side of them (err really…??.) to the people. They amend the law in order to satisfy the citizens (do MP’s actually know how to make the law?. Wan Farid can make law? wo wo just kidding ok?).

Back to square one, in the article stated that the writer’s friends name Soraya married to an English man who did not know about his wife. It’s pretty funny if I say we are in the Melayu tribe. It such an awkward!… Not all Americans lack of knowledge of Malaysia, Helloooo we are ealready have the tallest twin towers here!. how come they still said that we are live in trees,??If they don’t know they should live in Mars or somewhere far away from the Earth.

Do you proud to be Malaysian? We are in the multi-racial country, we lepak at the mamak stall with all races. There is no bombing here and there, at least we can still hear the bird 'cip cip' for us in the morning.
We as the developing country still can adopt any new and latest technologies, no worries maannn~. Someday we will be a develop country. Align with Japan, The US, UK.

They have Ultraman, They have Superman, at least we have eerrr can we say Cicak Man?...
