Assignment 2

Anyone who has worked or travel long enough to other countries, might found out that values and cultures are clearly different .Some cultures of group decisions, where the leader should take the change. For example in German, meeting usually start on time, but while in Brazil, they might be start half and our later without much concern .we need to responsive to the fact that each countries posses their own cultures, where the different exist between them. This situation can influences decisions, behavior and relations among the people. Some cultures unconsciously or subconsciously deeply held beliefs that specify general preferences and behavior and define what is right and wrong.

Anthropologist’s and sociologist’s context define that culture is the set of learned behavior, beliefs, attitudes, value and ideals that are characteristic of that particular society or population.

A framework had been developed by Greert Hofstede, a Dutch Scholar and Consultant named Hosftede’s Cultural Model of Analysis. It has five dimensions. Here, we only want to talk about one of the dimensions, it is Uncertainty Avoidance. It is a cross cultural dimension that refers to the degree of which people are comfortable with ambiguous situation and with the inability to predict future events with assurance. It divides into two, weak uncertainty avoidance and strong uncertainty avoidance. Weak uncertainty avoidance represents these who have strong tolerance of ambiguity and certainty. For strong uncertainty returning to individuals who seek orderliness consistency structure, formulated procedures and laws to cover situation in their daily lives.

In the article taken, titled “Amid Treetops and Astride Camels” it is a short story about a Malaysian guy named Amid who live in US, being showered by pertubing questions about his life, his background in Malaysia. Seems like people around the world are not being exposed with our country locally named Malaysia located at South East Asia what a great contribution have we given to the world that the rest of it would seek us out on map? These people don’t know who are Malaysians? What is Malaysia?Back to our discussion about culture dimension.Amid in this story tell about his girlfriend,Soraya who was a gorgeous lady, married to an American,Henry. She can be categorized under strong uncertainty avoidance. This is because she came from Malaysia, backup with a strong difference cultures and customs,as people around think that she and her people in Malaysia cannot speak English, neither fluently and they are surprise as Soraya can speak English….fluently.She even can fit living in Texas,us. She’s actually came from a wealthy and prestigious background, even she is a Malaysian. So,what’s wrong with Malaysian??So was getting fedup as the people around asking the same questions, showing that they thought Malaysians are back-dated citizen, left behind from mordenization, not at all. Amid, this story teller also at the same situation, being asked whether Malaysian still live in trees. People in Malaysia belief that having a stable secure life is important.

As for weak uncertainty avoidance we can put obviously, Sue-Ann, Henry’s sister, also Soraya’s sister in law. She is quite curiousity women, as she wants to explore about her Malaysian sister in law when she call Henry for some inquiries about Soraya. Whether Soraya can live in the hot weather in Texas, whether she misses her family in Malaysia, and the best part is which tribe Soraya is from. Here, we can conclude that Sue-Ann is quite under estimate people like Soraya. People in US are quite always on –the-go; always change according to time, round and round. They left all the past behind to get the future, and they prefer to face the risk as they can manage conflict and competition. This is contradicting with people in Malaysia like Soraya.
